The journey

From captives fueling the economy of the new world
to enduring servants hoping for a brighter tomorrow
From displaced, disenfranchised, three-fifths piece of property
to emancipated second-class free men and women
From under the hand of reconstruction and Jim Crow
to lifting the hand to enlisted in the protest
From sitting and marching and demanding
to believing in and receiving the justice we deserved
From Fredrick and Booker and Martin and Malcom
to momma and daddy and brother and sister
Our journey has been long and we’ve seen great success
from the tears, pain and death we suffered
It is this journey that paved the way for this man to become the first
